The Kalachakra Mandala painting is a representation of the abode of the deity named Kalachakra who holds the secrets of time and enlightenment in his possession. His representation can be found in the center of the painting. Inside the layers of the mandala 700 other deities are depicted. The square space of the painting-the abode of the great Kalachakra -has five levels or floors corresponding to enlightened body, enlightened speech, enlightened mind, enlightened wisdom and enlightened great bliss.
The mantra associated with the Kalachakra Mandala is Om Ham Ksha Ma La Va Ra Ya. The purpose of the mantra is to purify the mind, body, emotions and speech of the person. Through meditation on the mantra and the painting one gains deep knowledge and insight. One becomes the master of time and gains knowledge of the universe and the immortality of the soul.

The Kalachakra Mandala can also be created in sand. After it is created and meditated upon it is erased -symbolizing the ephemeral nature of time and the transcending of the ego.
