Most of the art that we feature at Sacred Art of Nepal is Thangka Art . Thangka art originated in the monasteries of Tibet. This art form is based on precise sacred geometry and is created with skill by artists who practice meditation. There is a divine quality to each of the paintings. The subject matter is chosen to promote enlightenment, cosmic understanding, protection and peace.
It can take weeks and even months to complete a Thangka painting depending on the complexity. There are many steps to produce one work of art: preparation of the canvas, measurement, composition, sketching, coloring, shading, finishing. When you purchase a Thangka original, you are paying less than $1 an hour for the amount of time, energy, skill and materials required to produce one piece.
Each painting is an original and no two are alike. Many themes repeat themselves in Thangka Art but each artist has freedom to express the theme with his/her own creativity. Most paintings have a specific mantra associated with it.
Thangka tradition disallows signing of works since art is a selfless act of worship. Sometimes several people collaborate to produce one work of art – each contributing his specific talents to create the best artwork.
